REIKI FOR PEOPLE
“A bird does not sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.”
– Joan Walsh Anglund
The word Reiki comes from two kanji, or Japanese characters used in writing: Rei (“spirit”) and Ki (“energy”), so literally the Japanese word Reiki can be defined as ‘spiritually guided life energy’ or ‘universal life force energy’. It is a natural Japanese energy healing system that is thousands of years old. Although originally used to assist spiritual development in Japan, today it is most commonly used throughout the world for “hands-on” healing. It is a holistic healing system, meaning that it treats the whole being, addressing problems and healing at all levels: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Along with other therapies, such as acupuncture, homeopathy, and Qi Gong, Reiki is part of the evolving field of energetic healing, renewed from the wisdom and knowledge of ancient cultures for use in today’s world. It is life energy that is guided by a Higher Power.
You do not have to believe or understand Reiki for it to work. Receiving the energy is a deeply relaxing experience that reduces stress while promoting feelings of calm, comfort, and well-being. Using only a very light touch to transmit energy through the palm chakras or no touch at all, the practitioner becomes a conduit of Divine healing energy, which is passed to the client. Since Reiki is pure energy it isn’t subject to the limitations of time and space. And as we are also made up of and connected by energy, the healing energy can travel across a building, an entire community, another continent, or to the past or future. The scientific community accepted Einstein’s Theory of Relativity and acknowledged that space and time are relative, not absolute concepts. Eventually, when scientists will be able to clarify how energy travels across time and space they will be able to explain Reiki in logical, comprehensive terms.
While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not affiliated with any religion; there is no belief system attached. It can never do harm; it is always beneficial and works to improve the effectiveness of all other types of therapy. The nature of Reiki is perfect harmony and balance, so it always finds the origin of health problems and works for the highest good. Reiki has been used in healing practically every known illness and injury including serious problems like multiple sclerosis, heart disease and cancer as well as anxiety, depression, insomnia, fatigue, joint and muscle pain, headaches, effects of chemotherapy, allergies, arthritis, addictions or asthma. It can also be used to maintain health and energetic balance in healthy beings and heal emotional and spiritual problems. Although elimination of symptoms is usually the eventual or immediate outcome, healing is best described as a return to greater wholeness and connection with our spiritual nature. Reiki is very helpful in easing the transition between life and death.
So what can you expect from a Reiki treatment? Relaxed and fully clothed, you either rest on a massage table or sit comfortably in a chair while the practitioner holds her hands on or above you. As the energy is spiritually guided, it flows to wherever it is needed. It can usually be felt as a tingling in the body or as a warm sensation. Depending on what is needed, a session usually lasts about 1 hour.
As mentioned earlier, Reiki energy helps to heal all living things. It brings about positive changes emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually, providing deep relaxation and a sense of peace. As a healing system, its simple, non-invasive, gentle nature is combined with its powerful results. Reiki is practiced throughout the world, including at over 300 major hospitals and medical centers in the United States. Until recently, Reiki was available only to humans, but increasing numbers of Reiki practitioners are establishing practices devoted to animals.
The secret of inviting happiness
The miraculous medicine of all diseases
Just for today, do not be angry
Do not worry and be filled with gratitude
Devote yourself to your work and be kind to all living things
Every morning and evening join your hands in prayer,
Pray these words to your heart,
And chant these words with your mouth
Usui Reiki Treatment for the improvement of body and mind
The founder….Usui Mikao
Anger at others or yourself can create serious blockages in your energy. Those blockages often result in illness. Endless worry about the past, present and future can also have a negative impact on health. Spiritually guided energy healing can remove those anger blockages and promote well-being by relieving worry and reducing stress. Gratitude brings joy to the spirit and working honestly brings richness and strength to the Soul.
“Life is not measured by the breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away.”
– Maya Angelou
A memorial stone erected in 1927 honors the life of Dr. Mikao Usui, founder of the Reiki healing system. Dr. Mikao Usui or Usui Sensei as he was called by his students in Japan, was born on on August 15, 1865 in the village of Tandai in the Yamagata district of Gifu prefecture, which is located near present day Nagoya, Japan. It was thought that he entered a Tendai Buddist school on or near Mt. Kurama (“horse saddle mountain”) when he was four years old. He also studied kiko, the Japanese version of qigong, which is a health and healing discipline based on the development and use of life energy. Usui found that these healing methods required the practitioner to build up and then deplete his own life energy when giving treatments, and wondered if it were possible to do healing work without depleting one’s own energy.
Usui Sensei had an avid interest in learning, and worked hard at his studies. He traveled to Europe and China to further his education. His curriculum included medicine, psychology, and religion, as well as fortune telling, which Asians have long considered to be a worthy skill. He eventually became secretary to Shinpei Goto, head of the department of health and welfare who later became the Mayor of Tokyo. He was also a member of the Rei Jyutu Ka, a metaphysical group dedicated to developing psychic abilities.
Usui Sensei’s personal and business life were failing in 1914. As a sensitive spiritualist, he had spent much of his time meditating at power spots on Mt. Kurama, where he received his early Buddhist training. He traveled to this holy mountain where he enrolled in Isyu Guo, a 21 day training course sponsored by the Tendai Buddhist Temple . Although we don’t know for certain what he was required to do, it is likely that fasting, meditation, chanting and prayers were part of the practice.
There is a small waterfall on Mt. Kurama where even today people go to meditate. This meditation involves standing under the waterfall and allowing the waters to strike and flow over the top of the head, a practice which is said to activate the crown chakra. At midnight during his third week of fasting, Usui Sensei suddenly felt a powerful shock in the center of his brain, as if he had been struck by lightning. He lost consciousness. After several hours he came to and woke to find dawn breaking. To his surprise he was feeling refreshed in a way he had never felt before. During this incident, divine Reiki energy penetrated his body and soul. As the cosmic energy and his own energy resonated together, he came to realize, “The Universe is me – I am the Universe.” He had finally achieved the enlightenment he had so long pursed and realized he had received a wonderful new gift – the ability to heal others without depleting his own energy.
Having attained enlightenment, Usui Sensei ran joyously down the mountain. On the way he tripped over a rock and ripped off his toenail. He laid his hand on the toe and to his surprise, the pain disappeared, the bleeding stopped, and the toe was healed. Finding that Reiki produced great healing, he decided to share this blessing with others. After experimenting, he developed a method that would enable him to pass on this wonderful ability to other people. This method is now known as “Shin-Shin Kai-Zen Usui Reiki Ryo-Ho” or “The Usui Reiki Treatment Method for Improvement of Body and Mind.”
